Advice that only Momma Patti could give…

Lloyd

Lloyd’s latest single, “Lay It Down,”  is replete with sexual connotations and metaphors–nothing out of the ordinary. That’s normal for a contemporary rhythm & blues hit.   But,  momma Patti Labelle seems to think that there is one thing missing from this version, and that’s L.O.V.E.  I must admit that my favorite part of the original version is “Don’t be bourgeois, cuz tonite I need a hood girl.”  LOL and that has nothing to do w/ love…don’t judge me.   But, I do like part 2 much better.

Billboard.com on the original version…

“Tonight girl Imma show you how much I love you, let the party begin/Imma do something I never did to you girl, Imma turn you out, I’ll show you I know you girl,” he boasts on the Polow Da Don production. After requesting that she “wrap her hair up,” insinuating there will be lots of sweating taking place, he asks his lady to lay her head on his pillow so he can “lay it down” and “work it good.”

I’m not sure what Polow Da Don and Lloyd did to get the living legend momma Patti Labelle on part 2, but I love it! She sends a “get it together” message that only a momma could send to her young boy.  We need more mommas telling our young men this:

“If you really want to keep a good girl, then why you run the streets with a hood girl?  If you want to keep this girl in your life, you better straighten up and treat this girl right.  And tell her, ‘I love you, I need you…'”

Part II– btw, I don’t think this would have worked with any artist other than Patti w/o coming off as melodramatic.  I also love the fact that he paid homage to musical legends Teena Marie (RIP) and the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin.
